MAALAEA - Six large fanlike structures atop a wall at the Maui Ocean Center will soon be generating renewable energy in an experimental project to help power Maui's only ocean aquarium. The six wind turbines in the "Architectural Wind" generation system are scheduled to go online possibly this week to reduce the center's demand on the Maui Electric Co.'s grid, said General Manager Kate Zolezzi.
A fleet of miniature wind turbines at Boston Logan International Airport have perhaps the best view of the city, overlooking the downtown skyline across the expansive harbor as commercial jets descend overhead. As micro air vehicles become smaller, individual soldiers may use them as their own tactical reconnaissance assets. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) selected AeroVironment, Inc. as a contractor for its Nano Air Vehicle program, a 10-gram (0.3-oz.) craft with a 3-in. wingspan.
Fascination with wind turbines small enough to mount on a roof is spreading from coast to coast. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York last month proposed dotting the city with them. AeroVironment will upgrade the 0.5kg (1lb) Wasp unmanned aircraft system to perform "hover/perch and stare" missions under a $4.6 million contract newly awarded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The agency's stealthy, persistent, perch and stare (SP2S) programme seeks to introduce "an entirely new generation of perch-and-stare micro air vehicles capable of flying to difficult targets, landing on and securing to a perch position", according to a DARPA fact sheet.
